Fix TAP Adapter Issues on Windows

TAP Adapter Error

If you’re seeing a “TAP Windows adapters are currently in use” error, this guide will help you fix it.

Error Message

You may see this error when trying to connect:

All TAP Windows adapters on this system are currently in use.
Exiting due to fatal error

This error occurs because the TAP network adapter (used by OpenVPN) is not responding properly.

Quick Fix: Reset the TAP Adapter

Try this simple solution first:

  1. Open Network Connections

    Right-click the WiFi icon in your system tray and select “Open Network and Sharing Center”

  2. Go to Adapter Settings

    Click “Change adapter settings” in the left sidebar

  3. Find the TAP Adapter

    Look for an adapter named “TAP-Windows Adapter” or similar

  4. Disable the Adapter

    Right-click the TAP adapter and select “Disable”

    Wait 5-10 seconds

  5. Enable the Adapter

    Right-click the TAP adapter again and select “Enable”

  6. Try Connecting

    Open VPNBaron and try connecting again

Permanent Fix: Reinstall VPNBaron

If the error keeps coming back, reinstall VPNBaron to get a fresh TAP adapter:

  1. Uninstall VPNBaron

    • Go to SettingsAppsApps & features
    • Find VPNBaron in the list
    • Click Uninstall
  2. Restart Your Computer

    This ensures all components are fully removed

  3. Reinstall VPNBaron

    Download and install the latest version from our Windows installation guide

    The installer will automatically install a fresh TAP adapter

  4. Connect to VPN

    Open VPNBaron and connect - the error should be resolved

Alternative: Reinstall TAP Driver Manually

If reinstalling VPNBaron doesn’t help, you can reinstall just the TAP driver:

  1. Check for Existing TAP Driver

    Navigate to C:\Program Files\TAP-Windows to see if it exists

  2. Uninstall TAP-Windows

    • Go to Control PanelProgramsPrograms and Features
    • Find TAP-Windows in the list
    • Click Uninstall
  3. Download TAP Driver

    Get the latest TAP-Windows driver from the official OpenVPN website: OpenVPN TAP Driver Downloads

  4. Install the Driver

    Run the downloaded installer as administrator

  5. Restart VPNBaron

    Close and reopen VPNBaron, then try connecting

Still Having Issues?

If none of these solutions work:

  1. Check for Conflicts

    • Uninstall any other VPN software that might be using TAP adapters
    • Temporarily disable antivirus software to test
  2. Run as Administrator

    • Right-click VPNBaron
    • Select “Run as administrator”
  3. Contact Support

To avoid TAP adapter issues:

  • Keep VPNBaron updated to the latest version
  • Don’t install multiple VPN applications that use TAP drivers
  • Restart the TAP adapter if you notice connection issues
