If you’re seeing a “TAP Windows adapters are currently in use” error, this guide will help you fix it.
The TAP driver is only used by OpenVPN-based manual setups on Windows, such as the community OpenVPN GUI or OpenVPN Connect clients. You may see this error when trying to connect:
All TAP Windows adapters on this system are currently in use.Exiting due to fatal errorThis error occurs because the TAP network adapter (used by OpenVPN) is not responding properly.
Try this simple solution first:
Open Network Connections
Right-click the WiFi icon in your system tray and select “Open Network and Sharing Center”
Go to Adapter Settings
Click “Change adapter settings” in the left sidebar
Find the TAP Adapter
Look for an adapter named “TAP-Windows Adapter” or similar
Disable the Adapter
Right-click the TAP adapter and select “Disable”
Wait 5-10 seconds
Enable the Adapter
Right-click the TAP adapter again and select “Enable”
Try Connecting
Open your OpenVPN client and try connecting again
If the error keeps coming back, reinstall your OpenVPN client to get a fresh TAP adapter:
Uninstall the OpenVPN Client
Restart Your Computer
This ensures all components are fully removed
Reinstall the OpenVPN Client
Download and install the latest version from the official OpenVPN website: OpenVPN Community Downloads
The installer will automatically install a fresh TAP adapter
Connect to VPN
Open your OpenVPN client and connect - the error should be resolved
If reinstalling the OpenVPN client doesn’t help, you can reinstall just the TAP driver:
Check for Existing TAP Driver
Navigate to C:\Program Files\TAP-Windows to see if it exists
Uninstall TAP-Windows
Download TAP Driver
Get the latest TAP-Windows driver from the official OpenVPN website: OpenVPN TAP Driver Downloads
Install the Driver
Run the downloaded installer as administrator
Restart Your OpenVPN Client
Close and reopen your OpenVPN client, then try connecting
